The 5-Step Pool Opening Framework

Clear the Debris
Before any chemicals touch the water, physically remove organic matter. Winter leaves and sediment consume chlorine rapidly. Use a deep-bag leaf rake to scoop the bottom — even if you can't see the floor.
Scrub the Walls
Algae forms a protective biofilm shell that shields it from chlorine. A heavy-duty stainless steel wire brush destroys this barrier, allowing the shock treatment to penetrate and kill algae instantly.
The Initial Shock
Now we drop the hammer. It takes significantly more chlorine to kill algae than to maintain clear water. Add 3-4 bags of Cal-Hypo shock directly into the deep end with the pump running on high for 24 hours.
Balance & Clarify
After 24 hours the algae will be dead, but the water will be cloudy grey. Test your chemistry — ensure pH is between 7.2 and 7.6. High pH renders chlorine completely ineffective. Run your filter continuously.
Lock It In
Once the water is crystal clear and balanced, establish your maintenance routine. Load your chlorinator with 3-inch Trichlor tabs to maintain a steady 3-5 ppm free chlorine residual all week long.
